Chicago Tourism

Chicago is an exciting place to visit. As one of the major cultural and financial center of America, Chicago has more to offer than most any other city in the world. From ethnic restaurants from hundreds of countries, to art museums displaying fine and modern works of art from around the world, Chicago has something for everyone.

To make your travel to Chicago special, it is important to start with an easy entrance into the city. Many choose to fly into Midway Airport for this reason. As the smaller airport of the two major ones, Midway makes for quick and easy arrivals. And, Midway is connected to all of Chicago via the world famous elevated train. There are many hotels near Midway Airport, however it is the Carlton Inn Midway that is the only one that is within the city limits of Chicago and is just one block from the elevated train. Offering outstanding service and reasonable prices, this hotel is surely the best bet for Midway travellers.

Once you get comfortable in your hotel you will have the opportunity to explore the city. Hop on the train, and in just 15-20 minutes you’ll be in downtown Chicago. Downtown is the cultural and financial center of the city. Although relatively few Chicagoans live in this district, it still has so much to offer. From the famous parks and museums, to the theaters and restaurants, Chicago’s downtown is mind-blowing. One favorite is to go to the top of the Hancock Building, to the 96th floor, for a drink at the lounge during sunset. It is a truly spectacular experience!

Many come to Chicago not for tourism but for business. McCormick Place Exhibition Center is the main meeting space in Chicago. Conventions at McCormick Place often host over 40,000 attendees. A “small” convention has 10,000 people! These conventions range from the world famous automotive show, to more industry specific conferences such as for bulk handling systems.

With millions of visitors every year for both leisure travel and for business, Chicago has earned the position of being one of the worlds most interesting travel destinations. Next time that you have the chance to enjoy leisure travel, keep in mind the amazing choices that Chicago has to offer. From world-class zoos to Second City improve theater, Chicago has something to fit you and your needs.

City Creek Center Opening in Salt Lake City

On the list of places I was likely to travel to, Salt Lake City Utah certainly wasn’t at the top of the list. But looking at the new mall being built there, I may just change my mind.

City Creek Center is the first indoor destination in Salt Lake City as compelling as the majesty of Utah’s world-renown outdoor lifestyle of skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and mountaineering. It features a retractable roof, an indoor creek, a pedestrian skybridge,.

And I’ll assuming you’ve heard of the Bellagio water fountain show in Las Vegas? This place has two 18 foot waterfalls, and three fountains developed by WET, the same designers who careated th Bellagio fountains in Vegas. Here’s a place you can visit all indoors, all winter, without slipping on ice or ruining your shoes with salt because of a heated snow melt system.

City Creek Center is built on the site of two former shopping malls. They’ve got a pretty aggressive sustainability program — more than 80 percent of its materials recycled and reused from the previous structures. (As I shop I’ll be congratulating myself for saving the planet, LOL.)

Last but not least, City Creek Center will have a great mix of stores. Anchored by Nordstrom and Macy’s, approximately 80 stores and restaurants populate the center, a third of them completely new to Salt Lake.

Opening March 22, 2012, City Creek Center will be Utah’s newest retail and dining destination covering two downtown city blocks with a tempting mix of stores and restaurants. Can’t wait to see it for myself.

Keeping the kids entertained over the holidays

If you’ve got kids, chances are you’ve risked the family holiday at least once before. When I was younger my parents rarely treated us to a family weekend break, mostly because my sisters and I were such terrors that they could hardly get us out the front door without one of us hitting the other. I do feel a bit bad for being such a nuisance when I was little, but I don’t think any amount of apologising to my mum will help!

No matter how good a parent you are, your kids are guaranteed to have a tizzy once in a while and you can trust that it’s going to be in public. I think that’s why so many parents shy away from the idea of a family holiday, where there are ample opportunities for raging toddler tantrums and teenage mood swings. Particularly if you are working hard, you could even treat yourself to a midweek breaks, so the only real answer is to go somewhere that everyone can relax and enjoy themselves.

The key to a good holiday is finding something for everyone to do, and this is even more important when you’re holidaying with kids. I recently went on holiday with my sister, her husband and their two kids (five and 11). It was more of a pity invite than anything else (I’d been bemoaning the fact that I hadn’t been on holiday for over three years) and I’d fully expected it to be a nightmare, but I was pleasantly surprised.

My sister’s a pro at keeping her kids busy. She says she can see it in their eyes when they’re about to lose interest, and she’s estimated that she’s got about five seconds to get them involved in the activity again before they start causing a ruckus. We stayed at a holiday park for the break and, I swear, I haven’t seen her that relaxed since before her 11 year old was born.

Holiday parks are the absolute ideal place for a family holiday – my sister arranged for her 11 year old to hang out at the teenage clubs for most of the break, and he also went and played some football at the sports courts, took some lessons in archery and ever made a couple of friends. Her 5 year old was enthralled with the arts and crafts sessions – we can home with about a hundred finger paintings. She also attended a good few puppet shows and my sister took her to some family friendly entertainment shows throughout the break.

We stayed for a full week and for around three whole days we were firmly planted in the water park, which had areas for all age groups. My sister, her husband and I mostly lounged by the side of the pool, but her kids went on all the rides, the log flumes, the rafts and everything else.

So, I’ve learnt first-hand that family holidays don’t have to be a drag, and I’m definitely inviting myself on my sister’s next holiday park break!

Prices rise in Burma as tourist numbers surge

Right now Burma is experiencing a tourism boom. Aung San Suu Kyi’s release from house arrest along with the country’s move towards democracy are two important reasons for this.

These political changes have dramatically affected hotel, car hire, and airline availability. Costs of travel are expected to rise in order to match current demands. In fact, every facet of the travel industry in Burma is set to experience inflation. This includes local restaurants, freelance guides, and travel agents.

The current rising tourism demand could force prices to increase by 35 to 50% by the end of March 2012. However, suppliers have not yet confirmed their rate alterations just yet. Still, holiday travel in Burma is expected to raise 300% from the previous year – more than one million tourists.

Just like any other place in the world, Burma has its own story. This is one more reason besides the recent political reforms that make this country what it is. Popular attractions are described below.

The Golden Rock (a.k.a. Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda). This is one of the most sacred places in all of Burma. Buddhists from China, Laos and Thailand believe in the power of The Rock. The story behind this landmark concerns a hermit who places this rock on a pillar thousands of years ago.

This was done before his death so people could continue to worship him after he passed away. It is believed that this rock has magical powers because it lies at the edge of the pillar but does not fall. This attraction is opened to visitors primarily during the dry, cool seasons.

Inle Lake (a.k.a. Inlay Lake). This body of water situated over Shan State Highland is the home of the Inthas people. This is a great place to hire a boat and travel around the lake. Along the way, you can visit multitudes of villages and attend the famous floating Phaungdawoo Pagoda market. This market usually is open during the Pagoda Festival, a celebration that takes place once a year at the end of September or early October.

Shwedagon Pagoda. This site is regarded as the number one tourist attraction in the country and it is the center of Buddhism in Burma. It is said to be covered in 30 to 60 tons of gold and supposedly a large number of jewels are buried underneath. This land’s most precious arts, crafts, sculptures, and more are found here.

National Herbal Park. Located near the Naypyidaw-Taungnyo Road, this park contains over 20,000 herbal and medicinal plants representing over 700 species from all over the land. This vegetation is protected by the government to help prevent depletion and extinction. Nearby is also the Safari Park, Water Fountain Garden, and the Zoological Gardens.

The New York Times has nominated Burma as one of the top three hottest tourist destinations of 2012. Holidays to Burma are likely to become increasingly popular despite the predicted rise in travel costs.

How To Make Friends on Vacation

If you’ve ever found yourself on vacation without anyone but your family, or even by yourself, you’ve probably faced the challenge of how to make friends and meet people during these situations.

This can be though especially if you’ve had a lot of long-term friends back home for a while, and you aren’t sure how to meet new people, start conversations, or how to build relationships with people you don’t know well.

On top of this, sometimes it can be just plain in intimidating to talk to someone you don’t know well, and how to start conversations and “chat up” strangers, so that you can actually make friends and connect with people when you’re talking to them.

So in this article I want to highlight a couple of quick and easy techniques you can use to start conversations and get people interested in what you’re saying.
The first is storytelling.

If you think about television, books, music, or any form of entertainment, you quickly realize that there’s some form of a story involved in everything you talk about.

Stories are what keep people interested in what you’re saying, and are the glue that holds most relationships together, and they are what allow us to relate to, feel, and understand the people that we meet in our lives, and what allow us to see everyone we meet as an individual.

If you look at most social interactions they’re focused on telling stories, and the exchange of opinions, views, ideas, and basically anything that could be classified as communication between two people (i.e. building a connection).

And the best way to build stories while you’re talking to people, is to focus on building images in their mind, which means, when you’re speaking to another person, don’t use abstract words like “communication” which someone can’t physically visualize in their head.

When you’re talking to someone, use juicy, flavorful words that describe images, textures, and feelings, to give the other person a complete emotional experience that grabs their attention and wraps them in whatever you’re talking about.

This is the fastest way to connect with people on an emotional and intimate level, and to get the other person to feel like they’re connected to you, and like they’ve known you forever.

New Friends

The reason these social techniques work so well is because they focus on the same thing as all popular forms of media; they stimulate are emotions to keep us entertained, and keep us focused on what the other person is talking about. And they do this by building pictures in our heads, which create thoughts, feelings, and emotions.

Once these thoughts feelings and emotions are created inside of us, we develop a desire to know more, and we get involved in whatever is creating these sensations (think about a time you saw a TV show and couldn’t leave until you knew how the show resolved or turned out, and how it held your attention because it captured your imagination and made you feel powerful emotions), that’s the experience you’re shooting for when dealing with other people.

Now, this is important to do in most conversations, but it’s especially important to be aware of when you’re on vacation, and every social interaction you’re going to be in is going to be about meeting someone you’ve never met before spontaneously, and getting them to like you, and knowing some of these simple tricks can really go a long way toward not only making your life more fun, but toward making your vacations far more exciting, interesting and memorable than they have ever been at any time in the past.

Relaxing at the Constance Le Prince Maurice

I was lucky enough this year to have an extended Christmas break following an extremely busy December at work. After the usual week in Oxford alongside the extended family for a quintessentially English Christmas, I plumped for a change in scenery for my last week off before work and headed to the fabulous island of Mauritius.

As part of my job as a travel specialist working we are constantly working to update our working knowledge on all of the regions and accommodation we sell to, so I jumped at the chance to revisit one of my favourite hotels Mauritius has to offer – the Constance Le Prince Maurice. As part of the highly regarded Relais & Chateaux group, you know you are in for something special before you even step foot in the sixty hectares of tropical paradise that surrounds the illustrious hotel.

The hotel is located on a remote peninsula at the north side of the island which is over 45km from the airport. Even the capital Port Louis is relatively far away considering the small size of the island overall. This just adds to the exclusivity of the resort though and genuinely does make it one of the best places to stay in the entire Indian Ocean.

In terms of activities to keep you occupied if you are not simply tempted to flop out and relax on the golden beaches, there is a whole host to keep you entertained. If you are a keen Golfer and you can comfortably play in the 30 degree heat, the course on offer at Belle Mare Plage – the “Legend Golf Course” is simply breath taking. Established since 1994, the course is of a level you will rarely experience anywhere else in the world.

Of course Golf is not everyone’s thing. The Spa which is brought to you in association with Guerlain delivers on every front. Whilst remaining traditional in its core, the treatments are innovative and beyond luxurious. An hour in the spa will have even the most stressed guests transformed and ready to enjoy the rest of their stay.

Finally in terms of actual accommodation, there are a few choices. Ranging from the beyond basic “Junior Suites” working up to the “Princely Suite”, guests will be delighted with the quality and appearance of their rooms. I opted for the middle of the range “Villa” after previously staying in a Junior Suite and the upgrade was worth the extra expense. Overlooking the fish reserve, my “room on stilts” was the epitome of elegant luxury. The main problem you face is the resort is so alluring that you rarely want to go back to your room!

Needless to say my trip to the Constance has relaxed me enough to get back to work and start telling other people why they need to go there as well at their earliest opportunity.

Unusual Attractions to Visit in Austria

On top of all the fantastic museums, concert venues and coffee shops, Austria also boasts some amazing, unusual attractions that could really help your visit to the country come alive. Stay in a beautiful Austrian zimmer to get the most out of your stay – and see how many of these you can check off while you’re there.

Ice caves
When you think of Austria, you probably don’t think of ice caves, but in a valley near Salzburg that’s exactly what you’ll find. They have some wonderful ice sculptures and are certainly worth visiting in between checking out Mozart’s birthplace and doing some shopping.

Floating opera
Austria is very well known for its opera, but there is also a floating opera that makes for a great twist on the traditional venues. This only happens during the summer in Bregenz, so make sure you check the available dates before you go.

Lederhosen festival
If you are after a bit of traditional Austrian culture, you should definitely check out the lederhosen festival that takes place in Winidischgarsten. You’ll find plenty of beer as well as lots of lederhosen, making for a really great day out.

Rainforest
Again, the rainforest probably isn’t what first springs to mind when you think of Austria, but it is in fact home to Europe’s last remaining protected stretch of rainforest. You’ll find this in the Donau-Auen National Park, which is an area of floodplain filled with diverse flora and fauna. You could stay in a great Austrian zimmer and make a day trip to the park during your visit. There are plenty of Hotels in Austria, so accommodation is no issue.

Ferris wheel
Vienna is home to some of the most exciting cultural attractions in Europe – and there is also a rather famous Ferris wheel that you should definitely have a ride on while you’re in the city. You’ll find the Ferris wheel in the Prater amusement park and it could make a great end to a day of exploring the Votive Church or cathedral.

The lakes
As you probably know, Austria is well-known for its lakes – Carinthia is a good area to visit as the lakes in the region have won awards for its quality and the water can reach temperatures of up to 28 degrees centigrade.

Traditional ball
Finally, experience a traditional ball Austrian-style by spending the evening at the Johann Strauss Ball. This is an annual event that takes place at Vienna’s Hofburg Palace, so make sure you check out the dates and availability before you’re due to travel.
